Manholer Shoji Morimoto presentsManhole cover selection in Tokyo

We will introduce recommended manhole covers in Tokyo selected by manholer Shoji Morimoto.

  • manhole cover of Adachi

One of the lids in the so-called "Takenotsuka Manhole Cover Street", which is one of the most densely populated color manhole covers in the 23 wards. Children wearing running shirts with lids depicting the scenery of catching fish? The scenery of the shopping street is reminiscent of Showa nostalgia. There are few vestiges left now, but it seems to imitate the irrigation moats called Senju Moat and Takenotsuka Moat on the side of the Akayama Kaido.

  • Manhole cover of Setagaya

A color lid installed on the Kitazawa River Green Road from Akatsutsumi to Mishuku. The murmuring is reproduced along the Kitazawa River that once flowed around here, but what is flowing is the reclaimed water treated at the Ochiai Water Reclamation Center of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau of Sewerage. The scenery of the Kitazawa River on the passing day is engraved on the lid and goes beyond the times.

  • Manhole cover of Kodaira City

Mt. Fuji, which Japanese people love, is also used as a manhole cover in various places. It is surprising that it is not only the lid of Shizuoka and Yamanashi at your knees, but also the lid of Tama City and Kodaira City in Tokyo, and the lid of Ibaraki Itako City (former Ushibori Town) in the distance. This lid, which depicts the train running in a residential area and Mt. Fuji with an idyllic touch, is exhibited not only on the street but also at the "Kodaira City Fureai Sewerage Museum".

  • Manhole cover of Hachioji City

A lid on which the intangible folk cultural property "Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo", which should take measures such as creating national records, is drawn. The dynamic appearance of "Sanbaso", one of the performances of the car doll, is depicted. Near the coordinate lid of the manhole card in Hachioji Castle, the lid of Odawara City and the lid of Yorii Town are installed. I call it the official cross-border lid, but because it was an area that was once controlled by Mr. Hojo, it was set up at the edge of the sister city agreement.

  • Manhole cover of Ogasawara village

A lid designed with the sun in the image of a tropical country and shooting stars flowing in the night sky, centered on the humpback whale that visits the ocean of the Ogasawara Islands. It is difficult to create an opportunity to take a picture because of the location, and for Manholer, it can be said that it is a longing lid along with the lid of the dolphin in the same Ogasawara village.
(This photo was taken at the manhole cover exhibition held at the Suginami Ward Office in April 2021)

  • Manhole cover of Former Itsukaichi

The lid of Itsukaichi Town that existed until 1995 when Itsukaichi Town and Akigawa City merged as Akiruno City. The useful life of the iron lid is 15 years for roadways and 30 years for others, so there is a possibility that the names of the disappeared cities, towns and villages remain. It can be said that the real pleasure of manhole cover hobbies is to walk around unknown towns over such land records.

  • Manhole cover of Hino city

The lid of Toshizo Hijikata, who made a name for himself as the deputy director of the Shinsengumi. It was set up in his birthplace, Hino City, to commemorate his 150th anniversary of his death. What is interesting is the location of the installation, the unique style of poles being built around it and interfering with it, which gives a sense of respect to the great locals.
(This photo was taken from outside the pole.)

  • Manhole cover of Tama City (Hello Kitty)

© 2022 SANRIO CO., LTD. APPROVAL NO. L634431

Color lid of Tama City where Sanrio Puroland is located. It is a lid that I want you to see as one work with two pieces, and it has exactly the same design, but it expresses the rainwater lid and the sewage lid only by painting different colors. This idea is wonderful.

  • Manhole cover of Tachikawa city

The lid of the Tachikawa character "Kururin". A situation in which Kururin is peeking from inside by shifting the manhole cover. This design of shifting the manhole cover is unique and has a three-dimensional effect.

  • Manhole cover of Setagaya (Ultraman)

    ©円谷プロ

An impressive lid with a silhouette drawn on a bright red background. This silhouette jumped over time from the video of the opening song of "Ultraman" broadcast in 1966, and was incorporated into the design of the lid. It can only be said that it is wonderful to have a modern design while respecting the original. It is engraved on the ground that Tsuburaya Productions, which produces the Ultmann series, was founded in Setagaya Ward.

  • Manhole cover of Tokyo's 23 wards

A color lid that clearly shows the flowers of the capital of Tokyo, "Yoshino cherry tree," the tree of the capital, "Ginkgo," and the bird of the capital, "Black-headed gull." The design of seagulls placed on the outer circumference has been taken over by the lids of "Ultraman" in Setagaya Ward, "Monchhichi" in Katsushika Ward, "Atom" in Chiyoda Ward, and "March Comes In Like Lion" in Shibuya Ward.
    * This manhole cover is not installed on the street. It is exhibited at the Kuramae Water House. The facility tour may be canceled due to the influence of the new coronavirus. Please check the business status in advance when you come to the museum.
